Extraordinary But True Names of British People

Written by Nikki-ann on Friday, 30 November , 2007 at 11:21 am

While looking for Christmas presents for various friends and family members, I have come across this book that looks to be a must-read.

Potty, Fartwell and Knob: From Luke Warm to Minty Badger - Extra Ordinary But True Names of British People

It’s written by Russell Ash.  He’s trawled through 900 years worth of parish registers and census records to present us with quite unlikely but true British names (you have to feel sorry for some of these people!). Each name has been checked for authenticity and it’s source is given, including extra notes where further fascinating illumination is possible.

It was published in hardback format (256 pages) on 14th November.

ISBN: 9780755316540

Category: Family History, Books, Carnival of Genealogy

Sounds like an hilarious book. In a similar vein, I bought “The History of Farting” for my step-father.

Hello, Michele sent me.

Whoa. It’s amazing what people do to their children, isn’t it? We went Biblical, although with Opening Act #2, we didn’t know it was a Biblical name until we told the Rabbi what it was and he said, “Oh, didn’t you know who she was?”

Turns out that in the Bible, she was the wife of the guy whose name we gave to Opening Act #1… Oops.

Hi Nikki-Ann, Michele sent me to see what you’ve been thinking about lately…

I was cursed with a Cornish name which I was bullied for throughout school…Debating getting this book for my mother :-)

I must look for that book.
Sometimes I just wonder why parents name their kids what they do. Like the last name of Butts. Why would they name their son Harold?….WHY??

You have to really wonder about the cruelty of some parents! Imagine growing up with some of those names. Scary!

Nikki Ann, what a cute article. If you browse a lot of census records you can find some really odd names.
